Volunteer Teaching In Peru

Volunteer with teaching children from local schools in Peru and discover the iconic city of Cusco with GVI.

Program Information

Discover the iconic city of Cusco in Peru when you teach a range of children from different age groups from local schools. Help us contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal #4 as you help to improve the quality of mathematics, English and science in these schools, and gain hands-on teaching experience while exploring the metropolis of Cusco in your free time.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

While primary and secondary education is free and compulsory in Peru, the quality thereof is not of a high standard. Peruvian teachers are overworked with little to no resource to their disposal.

Volunteers joining this program will get involved in teaching mathematics, English and science to children from a range of different grades. English has been highlighted as a key focus area and something that locals are keen to learn. This will aid in interacting with tourists and their ability to conduct business with English speakers. Participants can expect to conduct workshops for teachers to provide training on different teaching methodologies; how to work with overcrowded classrooms; and how to work with multiple grade classrooms.

Apart from the English lessons, please note that teaching will be conducted in Spanish. If you require Spanish lessons these can be provided, just speak to your country expert about this add-on.

Project Life

GVI will provide training to all volunteers covering best practices of classroom management, lesson planning, curriculum development, local Peruvian life and other useful information.

You will work on the project Monday to Friday, planning and delivering educational classroom lessons in Cusco. Weekends are yours to explore the surrounding area or relax at the GVI base with your fellow volunteers and interns.

Accommodation is in a centrally located house or apartment with electricity and shared rooms and bathrooms. You will enjoy daily communal meals with your fellow volunteers.

Project Details

Our project details for our teaching programs are quite flexible and we develop them according to the specific needs of the local community at the time.

Local teachers are commonly under-resourced, so there is a need to provide them with assistance and additional teaching resources. In assisting teachers with lessons, you will help improve the quality of education in local communities in Peru.

How this program makes a difference:

This volunteer program allows participants with a unique insight into Peruvian culture while giving them a chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of their students and the local community. Participants’ efforts assist in improving the quality of education in this country in a sustainable manner.

Peru’s short, mid, and long-term objectives:

All of our programs have short, mid and long-term objectives that fit with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This enables us to report on our collaborative impact across the world in a streamlined manner, measuring which UN SDGs we are making a substantial contribution to. Furthermore, this will help our local partners and communities measure and visualize their contribution to the UN SDGs.

Upon arrival to base, you will be educated about the history of the UN SDGs. You will learn about the specific goals of your location, the long-, mid- and short-term objectives, and also clarification of how your personal, shorter-term involvement contributes to these goals on a global level.

Our aim is to educate you on local and global issues, so that you continue to act as active global citizens after your program, helping to fulfill our mission of building a global network of people united by their passion to make a difference.

- Why not go see the wondrous colour of the Rainbow Mountains, and do a trek to 4800 meters!
- Take a class in traditional Andean medicine or a pottery workshop, to create something special to take home with you.

Further Travelling Opportunities

There are a number of opportunities for exploring more of Peru. These could include taking a tour of the renowned Inca city of Machu Picchu, one of the best-known archaeological sites in the world. The outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy a hike up Cordillera Blanca, the world’s highest tropical mountain range. Lake Titicaca’s floating reed islands are also an attraction not to be missed. If your time and budget allows it, make a point of travelling Peru, you will not be disappointed!
