Where to start... My time in Puerto Morelos (7 weeks) was absolutely amazing. I received invaluable training in identifying and protocolling coral diseases and was able to meaningfully contribute to scientific efforts by entering that data into a database. The local staff are very well organized and can deal with unforseen disruptions (such as technical issues) to the schedule with amazing efficiency. Just as great was the support I received from my mentor throughout my internship. Not only was she just as excited about my ideas for my project as I was, she was also able to help me past roadblocks and always had valuable inputs to give. She was also always available to talk to if there were any other issues, personal or otherwise. In short, the local staff are fantastic! Needless to say, the other volunteers constituted another highlight. Weekend trips to Cozumel and Tulum were great, but even just sharing a drink after a long days work and having a nice conversation was extremely satisfying. Finally, the reef at Puerto Morelos is quite a sight to see. With it's amazing coral and fish populations, it would be a shame if that environment suffered any more than it already has. I'm glad to have done my part to prevent that!
